An Update on Project HOPE
The National Philanthropy of Lambda Kappa Sigma

The past two years have been marked by devastating natural disasters, the tsunami, earthquakes in Indonesia, and Hurricane Katrina. Project HOPE has been on the frontlines providing hope for each one of them. In the aftermath of the tsunami, HOPE provided relief to Thailand and Indonesia through their preexisting clinics and programs. Volunteers also worked aboard the USNS Mercy stationed in Banda Aceh. In the Fall of 2005, Project HOPE worked for the first time on American soil, providing relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, mainly working in clinics in Mississippi, but also helping to staff the USNS Comfort stationed in New Orleans.
In addition to providing near continuous disaster relief, Project HOPE continues to run programs in underprivileged areas around the world. HIV programs are run in Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, the Dominican Republic, and Thailand and tuberculosis treatment programs are run in many Central Asian countries. The Village Health Bank program is succeeding in providing education and small business loans in countries such as Malawi, Peru, Guatemala, and Indonesia. In Eastern Europe and China, Project HOPE is training health professionals. The Basrah Children’s Hospital in Iraq, which Project HOPE is helping to build, is nearly complete and HOPE continues to support the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.
During the 2004-06 Biennium, Lambda Kappa Sigma raised and donated $7956.54 to Project HOPE. While this amount fell short of our goal to raise $10,000, this amount does not include donations from individual members of the Fraternity. During the 2006-08 Biennium, we would like to raise $10,000 to help HOPE deal with not only their day-to-day programs and operations, but also any disasters that may occur.
