School: Ferris State University
LKS Award: 2016 Chapter of the Year Award
Alpha Iota chapter is an energetic and ambitious group of young women! Our chapter was admitted into Lambda Kappa Sigma on May 17th, 1953. As of Fall 2016, we have 57 active members between the undergraduate and graduate pharmacy programs. Each year on Hygeia Day, we provide a continuing education program for pharmacists and students in the area. We also host a pharmacy school application and interview presentation each year for undergraduate pharmacy students. Through our coffee hour program within the College of Pharmacy, we are able to provide food and beverages in order to raise money for Project HOPE.
What is your best fundraising event?
Our most successful fundraising activity has been our Mr. Pharmacy Program. We held the first event in Spring 2016, and it was a huge hit. Through a little friendly competition, contestants were able to practice their pharmacy skills. We were also able to integrate the professors and faculty as judges and hosts. Everyone had a wonderful time, and we raised a significant amount of money for Project HOPE and for our chapter’s convention fund.
How does your chapter meet the Core Values of LKS?
Integrity
We take great care in making sure that our members hold themselves and our chapter to a high standard of integrity. It is our responsibility to build each other up as future healthcare professionals.
Leadership
Our chapter has many opportunities for leadership through our various chair positions and the executive board positions that are elected either yearly or biannually. Also, many of our members hold important positions outside of our organization.
Scholarship
Scholarship is considered an integral part of membership and is practiced by each member. Our Song and Scholarship Chair keeps track of study hours spent in the library or College of Pharmacy. She also takes note of impressive exam grades and reserves a large study room in the library during finals week so that our members have a place to go when they need somewhere quiet to work.
Service
Our Community Service Chair is in charge of planning volunteer activities and helping our members keep track of their service hours. We participate in many service events such as The Big Event (a community-wide service event), Adopt-a-Highway and the Pharmacy Care Clinic. There are always plenty of opportunities to volunteer, and we have no trouble meeting our goal of at least 23 hours reported by each member every school year.
Sisterhood
We elect a Sisterhood Chair each semester who puts together fun events for us to participate in as a chapter. These include trips to the John Ball Zoo, Secret Santa gift exchanges, crafting events and many other opportunities to spend time together outside of meetings and class. Thanks to our Sports Chair, we participate in intramural sports together each semester and attend a Grand Rapids Griffins hockey game each year.
