The Alpha Eta chapter at Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York works hard to exemplify sisterhood, scholarship, and service. Despite their relatively small size, at only 10 active members, this chapter proves that no matter the chapter size, LKS has a profound impact on campus and in our communities.
This past fall, the Alpha Eta sisters advanced both their sisterhood and scholarship through a trip to the Prospect Park Zoo. The chapter president, Fiona Carroll, organized this bonding experience for the sisters, allowing them to unwind after their midterms while also advancing their knowledge in veterinary pharmacy. With assistance from Veterinary Technician Angela Perry, the sisters of Alpha Eta learned all about medication use at the zoo. They learned that baboons use over-the-counter nasal sprays for allergies, sea lions use saline eye drops, and birth control plays an important role in animal conservation. From this trip, the sisters realized that restriction of access to birth control affects not only human women, but also the female animals in zoos across the country. This unique sisterhood event uplifted both women in pharmacy and women in veterinary medicine. What a cool sisterhood!
In addition to showcasing their sisterhood, Alpha Eta collaborates with other pharmacy clubs on their campus to serve their community. In December, the chapter collaborated with Project Sunshine to collect toy donations for the children of the Brookdale Hospital Family Center, allowing these families to celebrate the holidays despite their unfortunate circumstances. Alpha Eta also collaborated with the American Pharmacists Association on their campus for Operation Women’s Health, where they held a women’s hygiene product drive followed by the creation of feminine hygiene kits. The kits included feminine products and a printout of educational materials on the Opill. With help from their sisters, the Alpha Eta chapter received an overflow of donations and were able to make 148 kits for their local “I Support the Girls” organization. Way to go Alpha Eta!
Alpha Eta chapter is a shining example of the profound impact that LKS can make on campus, and in the community. By supporting organizations like Project Sunshine, I Support the Girls, and the Prospect Park Zoo, the sisters of Alpha Eta are promoting lifelong learning and health for all. No chapter is too small to make a difference, and through collaborations with other groups on campus, any chapter can help foster positive change in their community.
