On May 22nd, 1954 the Alpha Kappa Chapter of Lambda Kappa Sigma was founded at the University of Georgia. Now grown to 86 active members, Alpha Kappa knows how to host a successful fundraiser that members of the campus community look forward to each year.
The Dr. Pharm Dawg Pageant hosted by Alpha Kappa Chapter is a unique entertaining event that brings the campus community and sisters of Alpha Kappa together for a common cause. This pageant is hosted to raise funds for our philanthropy Project Hope and the Lambda Kappa Sigma Educational Trust. Businesses within the Athens, Georgia community graciously sponsor the event and donate towards the cause. Last year, Alpha Kappa was able to raise over $1000 for the Educational Trust. Attracting over 100 members of the student body, this is a must-see event!
So how does this pageant work? Each student organization within the school of pharmacy nominates a representative to participate in the pageant. Faculty and staff volunteer as judges, speakers, and hosts. Sisters volunteer to organize, assist with check-in, and even participate in the event. The pageant begins with an introduction welcoming members of the student body, recognizing Lambda Kappa Sigma, and a keynote speech. The first round focuses on professional dress. Contestants walk the runway in their best attire as the host introduces them and shares a few fun facts about each contestant. Next, contestants show off their individual talents such as singing, dancing, art, playing instruments, stand-up comedy, and many more. Following this, contestants show off their pharmacy skills in speed-based competitions such as counting pills and gowning and garbing. Lastly, each contestant must answer a fun pharmacy-related question pulled from a hat.
And now, what you’ve all been waiting for…crowning the winner! The winner of the pageant is crowned Dr. Pharm Dawg and carries this title for the remainder of the year. The first runner-up and the fan favorite receive a sash for their efforts. The winners also earned themselves a basket of goodies! The pageant concludes with closing remarks and special thank yous to all who helped put the event together including Alpha Kappa President Brantley Hughes and Philanthropy Chair Syndey Speir.
The members of Alpha Kappa hosted a successful fundraising event that members of the student body talk about all year! How can your chapter do the same?
- Collaborate with professional organizations within your school of pharmacy to increase attendance and participation
- Reach out to local businesses for sponsorship
- Involve faculty and staff to create an entertaining event that draws the student body in
- Host the event annually to establish tradition which gives members of the student body something to look forward to
