Student Spotlight: Meet Jessica Flanery!

LKS spotlights student and alumni members that are making a difference in their chapters, in their communities, and in the field of pharmacy.
Chapter: Alpha Omega Chapter (Sullivan Univ.)

About Jessica:

I am currently a second year pharmacy student at Sullivan University College of Pharmacy (SUCOP) and intern at Baptist Health in Louisville, Kentucky. Sullivan University is an accelerated, 3-year pharmacy program, meaning I am only one year from graduation! In my short time at SUCOP, LKS has by far been the most rewarding organization in which I have been involved. I have had the opportunity to grow as a leader and as a professional through my experience as fundraising coordinator and chapter delegate. Outside of school, my hobbies include playing tennis, spending time with my dog, and traveling. Last year, I had the opportunity to travel to Belize on a medical mission trip with some of my LKS sisters and fellow students. There, we provided medical services such as blood pressure screenings, lifestyle interventions, and acute care treatments to underserved parts of the country.

Why did you join LKS?

I knew I wanted to get involved in some organization within my pharmacy school, but I had not yet decided which group was right for me. Each year, SUCOP has a meet-and-greet for first year students to preview organizations within the school. After meeting the LKS members and seeing how friendly and intelligent these women were, I realized I wanted to be a part of LKS. It has been so gratifying to see our chapter grow and succeed.

Most memorable LKS experience?

My most memorable experience as an LKS lamb would be presenting at the 2016 LKS Convention in Scranton, Pennsylvania. I had the opportunity to speak during the Lamb TaLKS about our chapter’s annual silent auction benefiting Project HOPE. I have never thought of myself as a public speaker, but with the desire to do something significant at the convention, I decided to go out of my comfort zone. If I could give any advice to members attending convention, it would be to get involved and meet as many people as you can.

What are your career plans?

I am still exploring the different options within the pharmacy profession. I hope that APPE rotations will help me find my place. I am very much open to the idea of residency as there are a lot of great residency programs in Louisville and the rest of Kentucky. I just want to be in a position where I am proud of my career and where I am able to make a positive impact on the community.
