At the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, the sisters of Alpha Nu chapter are proudly dedicated to service and engagement with their community.
One event where the sisters exhibit leadership and service is Turn the Towns Teal, which helps to promote awareness of ovarian cancer. The sisters tie teal ribbons to various locations around Lexington to call attention to the disease during September, which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. This mission is especially important, as there are currently no conclusive early detection tests for ovarian cancer, and it is not something that can be caught by a routine pap smear. The ribbons around town and campus encourage the community to learn the symptoms and risk factors to aid in early detection and help keep themselves and their loved ones safe and aware.
Another event that the Alpha Nu chapter is involved in is Dining with Dignity, where the sisters help to prepare and serve food to the homeless population of Lexington, KY. This restaurant-style environment allows for a more dignified meal than the traditional soup kitchen, and the sisters are proud to engage with their community through regular volunteering.
Finally, Alpha Nu is proud to promote the health and safety of the University of Kentucky and Lexington community by participating in DEA Drug Take-Back Day events. They work with the DEA to properly collect and dispose of unused or expired medications. Reducing exposure to these medications is important for helping to prevent medication misuse and reducing the incidence of overdose. Way to go Alpha Nu!
