Chapter Spotlight: Alpha Beta Chapter’s Strategies for Successful Recruitment and Lasting Sisterhood

Alpha Beta Chapter was founded on October 16th, 1948 at the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy. With 96 active members, Tina Yang, current President of Alpha Beta Chapter, provided insight into their successful recruitment strategies.

Alpha Beta Chapter has been consistently successful in achieving a high number of active members. To continue this trend, the chapter holds events such as an Ice Cream Social which attracts a variety of students. Events like these allow potential new members (PNMs) to get to know the sisters of Lambda Kappa Sigma in a casual setting. Focusing on building connections with PNMs creates a bond and encourages involvement within the sisterhood. Their numbers have grown so much that the chapter created a New Recruitment Chair position to assist the New Member Educators in their outreach efforts.

So how does Alpha Beta Chapter ensure they have quality active members and not just quantity? The chapter targets incoming freshmen and sophomores within the pharmacy program, who are looking to become involved with professional organizations. First, they identify PNMs who align with the core values of LKS; Sisterhood, Leadership, Service, Scholarship, and Integrity. At events such as an involvement fair, current sisters then connect with PNMs and share their personal experiences of what drew them to LKS. These sisters are well-prepared to convey LKS’s mission, effectively highlighting the leadership development opportunities and strong support system LKS has to offer. Remember, a key selling point is that our Fraternity is the only professional pharmacy organization with a mission to elevate women in pharmacy.

Another key to the strategy is continued communication. Using an interest form filled out at the involvement fair, New Member Educators can communicate with PNMs individually to invite them to upcoming events and informational sessions. A personal invitation shows a PNM that you are eager and want to see them there. Events well attended by current sisters are an opportunity to show off the bond within the chapter and your willingness to extend this bond to PNMs. Encourage PNMs to consider what they are looking for in a professional Fraternity. Highlight that LKS provides an incredible opportunity to grow as a leader and build lifelong connections with other women in pharmacy.
